We are very grateful that several excellent additions to our archives were made this year. The Alan C. Byers Collection of rare maps, books and photos mentioned on page 5 are one such addition. With the digital media becoming commonplace in our daily lives, we are encouraged that our digital media collection is expanding also.
Mr. Clyde Kirlin, writer and member of the Hana Cultural Center since 1985, has been most helpful in locating and recently securing 21 audio tapes for the museum archives.
Hana born Dr. Yoshio Kondo had recorded "Reminiscences of Hana" and donated them to the Bishop Museum where he worked as the Malacologist. When Coila discovered that Dr. Kondo's granddaughter was working at the Bishop Museum, she began making inquiries to secure a copy of the tapes for the Hana Cultural Center Hale Waiwai O Hana, our House of Treasures.
Clyde Kirling researched the Bishop Museum Catalog by way of the Internet and compiled a list of the taped reminiscences from his "online" research. This list was presented to Dr. Duckworth, Director of the Bishop Museum who generously donated a copy of the tapes to the Hana Cultural Center. Mahalo to Coila, Mr. Kirlin and Dr. Duckworth for this fine addition to our expanding archives of tapes.
Other tapes, these being video tapes, of the Hana District were recently donated by Steve Lysen. Steve was the audiovisual technician at the Hana Library from 1986 to 1995 and has an impressive collection of recordings of our history. Mahalo to Steve for this fine gift to our archives.
