On the National Register of Historic Buildings, the old "Hana Lockup" is finally under restoration. This project has been in the planning stages for many years and we are all pleased that the work is underway. Of particular importance to historic authenticity, all of the replacement wood had to be specially cut to match the rough cut of the original wood. In this case, the original wood was from 1936 when the jail was rebuilt after the original construction in 1871.
In the 1936 reconstruction, the builders chose to use metal roofing though several old timers remember that the original jail had a shake roof. Our restoration will return the shake roof.
Financing for this historically important task came from a lead grant of $7,500 from the County of Maui and we also borrowed $20,000 from our friendly banker. Please take a look at page 12 for details on how you can help us eliminate this construction debt.
