This 25th Anniversary year of the Hana Cultural Center marks the first phase completion of one of its most ambitious projects - the Kauhale O Hana. Having begun with visionary plans and the purchase of two lots in 1986, it is a dream of over a decade come true for many members and supporters.
It is an excellent beginning. The next phase is the completion of the Hale Wa'a, the Canoe House. Then we begin a formidable schedule of creating interprative programs with a primary focus on continuing education of both residents and visitors.
Further in this issue, as a tribute to the strong leadership of previous trustees, we are honored to list them and the years they served on the Cultural Center Board. Building on this theme, the year behind each supporter's name, indicates when they first became active with the Cultural Center.
Also new this issue is a clarification of "Life Membership". With the passing of our beloved Rebecca Eyster in October, it was decided that the "Life" in membership means the life of the Hana Cultural Center. Therefore we will continue to honor the names of those individuals who become Life Members as long as there is life in this Center. The Board of Trustees has also created a new classification of membership for the individual who contributes to the perpetuation of Hawaiian Culture in special ways. This "Honorary Life Membership" is only bestowed by the unanimous decision of the Trustees.
Further in this newsletter, we honor our capable and friendly staff; launch our educational web site onto the world wide web; bid Aloha to the East Maui Taro Festival which moves out on its own this year; and briefly identify the significant expansion plans for the next few years.
To all of our members and supporters of the past 25 years, Congratulations! We have made an excellent beginning!
