he following is an excerpt from the October 1994 issue of Hawai'i Artreach of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts...
"The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) recently recognized the Hana Cultural Center with a Certificate of Commendation for its contributions to state and local history, and in particular, for its leadership in the restoration of the Hana Hongwanji.
"The Certificate of Commendation is presented for "superior work within the context of available means and regional standards." The Hana Cultural Center received the award for the work that its volunteers have done over the years not only in restoring the Hongwanji and the Hana Courthouse, but also in building their little museum, developing their collections, and, most recently, adding a new state-of-the-art, environmentally-controlled, archival and collections storage annex.
"The Hana Cultural Center was recognized for the level of professionalism with which it conducts its restoration projects and manages its archives and collections of Hana history. The AASLH Awards Committee also commended the center's wide range of activities to make the local community more aware of its own history, and recognized the cultural center's stable organizational growth and financial management."
Our Director and Trustee, Coila I. Eade will represent HCC in receiving this wonderful honor for our organization in the near future.
